How to talk to strangers online safely
The vast majority of people on random video chats are there for a laugh and a good conversation. A few simple habits keep you safe from the rest.
Never share
- Your home address, school or workplace.
- Bank details, card numbers or one-time codes.
- Documents, passes or tickets in the frame.
- Links to your social media — at least not until you know the person.
Red flags
Money talk
Any request for money, gift cards or “a small loan” — end the chat.
Investment tips
A new “friend” who teaches you crypto trading is a classic scam.
Pressure
Urgency is a tactic. Anyone rushing you to decide is not on your side.
Moving elsewhere
Insisting you install another app or click a link — don’t.
Recording and blackmail
We never record video or audio. But anyone can screen-record their own device — no video chat in the world can stop that. So don’t do anything on camera you wouldn’t want to be seen elsewhere.
If someone threatens to publish a recording, don’t pay: paying rarely ends it. Save the evidence, block them and contact the police.
